ALEJANDRO PEREZ BECERRA

Cul-de-sac

Remembering JB
Julia Becerra (my old woman)
a John Berger, (a favorite when it comes to counting the last coins)
a JB (the güisqui = WHISKEY).

That art is not programmed is a truism. But it has laws. Therefore the composition reflects its importance; colors legitimize their status as incoming and outgoing; matter returns to impose the domains of the haptic; the plane hierarchizes backgrounds and counterpoints; light links and dissolves forms, as dictated by the choices of expression. As an orchestra in which the instruments must reconcile their sounds, so the pictorial plane harmonizes its consonances and projects them. Does this matter at a time when plastic values seem to have rebelled from a hand-brain-vision? Yes, it matters more than ever.

The artwork must be born of an internal process that demands, first of all, probity. This word (which is not synonymous with obedience) is related to behavior. The artist must always answer to an aesthetic behavior. A behavior that recognizes probity but at the same time, guides and limits excesses and fates. Alejandro Pérez Becerra, an artist who articulates skill and talent with intelligence uses it and knows it well.

Pérez Becerra is beyond the pure thematic. Notwithstanding the consistency of his series paintings -which are extremely ductile- he avoids repetitive restraints that don´t deepen a process. His composition - always festive, in some way ceremonious - develops an iconicity in which all rhythms will organize the parts in the whole. From there his painting rises and matures.
This uncommon fact helps to provoke a perceptual enjoyment.

His painting just catches you. They get at you because his resources are linked to incite agreement. Like beauty and purity / roughness and tameness / reality and fantasy. The language always plays opposites and their links. Therefore, landscapes can be seen as protagonists. The portraits are seen like masks out of humor and irony. The still- lives show the candor of a fruit or the innocence of a wild bouquet. Each of his series alternates times, because the brush knows how to open the precise path of his thinking. The path is there, because it has to be there...
